Sautéed Chayote Tops with Guava Fruit


Here is a recipe mostly being cooked in the province where the ingredients are readily available in the backyard.  In many places in the Philippines, chayote can be grown in the backyard.  Guava tree also bears fruits all year round.  Ripe guava fruits are usually used for sour-based soups in the Philippines. 

Ingredients: Quantity is usually as per preference

  • a bundle of Chayote (sayote) tops
  • 10-15 pieces small guava fruits, ripe – peeled - (you can make some small cuts to have the juice comes out when cooking)
  • a piece of onion
  • clove of garlic
  • sliced or ground pork
  • salt or fish sauce to season
  • half cup of water

Procedure:

1. Sauté the garlic and onion.
2. Add the pork and let it be cooked.
3. Add the chayote tops and guava fruit and add water.
4. Cover and let it simmer.
5. Season according to taste with fish sauce or salt.
