Filipinos have a good appetite eating. It goes to say that we are also good at cooking. As a matter of fact, Filipino women are often stereotyped to be always seen in the kitchen, cooking for their families. Regardless of being a working wife/mom, she makes sure that she prepares dishes that are delicious and healthy for her family. Here are five healthy dishes that are delicious and very Filipino that wives and mothers (or even husbands and fathers) can cook for their families.
Chicken Adobo with Pineapple
We always hear from nutritionists that we have to have a balanced meal every time we eat. Well here is one way to do so. Adobo is a famous dish in the Philippines but our adobo could also be a healthy dish. We all know that chicken meat is a good, low-fat source of protein, which can be used as fuel for the body. Chicken meat falls under Grow foods category. Pineapple on the other hand provides vitamin C which is good for the immune system and falls under Glow foods. With the presence of rice, which is under Go foods, a meal with a healthy dish like Chicken Adobo with Pineapple makes a complete diet. Another favorite Filipino dish is the Kare-kare. Sautéed Ampalaya with Egg
The Bitter Melon aka Ampalaya is considered to be one of the most nutritious herbal plants. It grows well on tropical countries like the Philippines. Admittedly, many children do not like the ampalaya because of its bitter taste, but because of innovations in cooking, there have been a number of healthy dishes that hide the bitter taste of the ampalaya, like sautéing it with egg to add another taste. Ampalaya is regarded as an effective remedy by diabetics. It is proven by science that ampalaya helps lower sugar content in the blood. Any viand with ampalaya will turn out to be a healthy dish.
Pinakbet is a Filipino dish that originated in the northern parts of the Philippines. It is a sautéed mixture of different vegetables. Usually, the vegetables used in Pinakbet are bitter melon, eggplant, tomato, okra, string beans, and winged beans. In other parts of the Philippines, they even add kamote, a type of root crop. As mentioned earlier, vegetables are generally nutritious. Needless to say, Pinakbet, a mixture of vegetables that have their own healthy benefits, is a healthy dish. Plus, this viand is also good for vegans.
Sinigang na Bangus
Lastly, the Sinigang is another favorite Filipino dish though pork is most commonly used for this viand. For health conscious individuals/families, we can use milkfish or bangus as substitute to make our Sinigang a healthy dish for the family. Bangus is abundant in the Philippines because our country is surrounded by bodies of water which makes fishing one of its main livelihoods. The most obvious benefit of this viand is that it is low-fat, therefore lowering the chances of heart related diseases.
